90 people evacuated in Membakut
MEMBAKUT: Some 90 people from 32 families have been evacuated following floods in several villages in Membakut on Friday, said District Police Chief DSP Azmir Abd Razak.

Of the total, 20 were men, 26 women, 20 boys and 24 girls. Azmir said five villages were affected, namely Kg Baitam, Kg Jambatan Baru, Kg Baitam Laut, Kg Lampijas and Kg Baitam Baru. The road was only accessible by heavy vehicles in Jalan Kg Sendok, Kg Poring and Kg Baitam while Jalan Kg Kayai was accessible to all vehicles.

“The operation to evacuate victims ended at 7pm and continued at 7am on Saturday except for emergency cases,” he said. Azmir said his team were on the scene with the firefighters, Department of Welfare, Ambulance, Rela and the Civil Defence Force (APM) to assist the evacuation to Pekan Membakut.

“He advised the villagers to take safety precautions if the downpour continues and immediately move to safer places as all the security forces are busy evacuating the victims,” he said.

Membakut Assemblyman Datuk Arifin Arif and District officer Jupri Etok were also at the scene visiting the victims. Police advised the public to keep their documents in a safe place and not to allow their children to bathe in the floods for their safety.
