More Labuan-Menumbok festive ferry trips next time
LABUAN: Ferry operators and relevant authorities have agreed to increase daily trips on the Labuan-Menumbok route every festive season following the recent traffic rush back to the island that left many stranded on the mainland.

Ferry operators, the Labuan Marine Department and the Sabah Ports and Harbour Department have agreed to provide at least 16 additional trips (four trips each ferry) during a meeting chaired by Labuan MP Datuk Rozman Isli to resolve the long-standing crisis.

Usually each ferry would only make two trips on regular days, however during the festive season or school holidays, the two operators here would provide nine trips with an extra trip added.

Commenting on the only available ramp at each terminal, Rozman said the Labuan Marine Department and Sabah Ports and Harbour Department will come up with a suitable ferry schedule.

Labuan’s four ferries operated by Juta Bonus Sdn Bhd and Labuan Mainland Link Sdn Bhd ply the route, with Galaxy able to accommodate 70 vehicles and 370 passengers, Kimanis 1 able to fit 50 vehicles and 250 passengers, Putrajaya 1 with capacity for 80 vehicles and 400 passengers, and the largest ferry, Goodwill Star, able to ferry 100 vehicles and over 400 passengers per trip.

Additionally, ferry operators said they will introduce an online ticketing system in compliance with a Transport Ministry directive.

“They are working on it now, and the Juta Bonus ticketing agent is expected to get the ticketing system up and running in October, while Labuan Point Sdn Bhd (Labuan Mainland Link’s agent) before the end of the year,” Rozman said.

An online system will help travellers from Sabah, Brunei and Sarawak plan their journey better.

Rozman, who spoke to reporters after the meeting, also disclosed that a new ferry for the Labuan-Brunei route under Labuan Mainland Link will be ready by the end of the year.

“This new ferry would then allow the existing Goodwill Star ferry (currently serving Brunei-Labuan) to fully-serve the Labuan-Menumbok-Labuan route,” he shared.
