KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Masters Athletics Association (Samas) has set a 48-gold medal target at the Malaysia Masters Athletics Championship to be held at Stadium Universiti Malaya from June 22-23.
Its President David William, said on Tuesday that they are facing strong challenge from India and Singapore to better their 44 golds, 27 silvers and 15 bronzes total haul in last year’s meet.

However, he is confident they will achieve their target with high hope on their most senior team member, the 86-year-old Alfred Lajawa (85-89), who will be competing in the 100m, 200m, 400m, long jump as well as Adeline Umbul (80-84) in 800m, 1,500m; Juliana Gumpil (55-59) in 100m, 200m, long jump, triple jump; Erine Sinuel in 100m, 200m, 400m, shotput; Aliudin Jumaat in high jump, 400m, 100m hurdles and also other potential winners such as Cecilia, Maksimon, Tarmizi Sandhu, Lucy Yong, Tay Yu Eng, Charlie Lee and Charles Lingam.

Meanwhile, a flag handing over ceremony conducted by Youth and Sports Minister Ginger Phoong Jin Zhe to the contingent was held at the Likas Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. – GL Oh
