Kuala Penyu teachers shine with bamboo straw project
Kota Kinabalu: An innovative ‘Cerangin’ team from SK Lambidan, Kuala Penyu, whose innovation of bamboo straw as a substitute to the conventional plastic straw won the competition in conjunction with the State-level Innovative and Creative Group Convention (KIK) during the 2019 Innovation Week (MiNOS).

The team comprising three teachers, Ester Ermelissa Ngoai, Zulkhaime Aleakhber and Dayang Manani Jasri, has named their project “The Borneo Bamboo Straw” to support the ‘Say No to Plastic Straw’ Campaign to increase environmental awareness on the need to reduce the use of disposable plastic straws.

Ester said the Borneo Bamboo Straw project came about following the ‘Zero Single-Use Plastics’ Campaign launched by the Ministry of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment & Climate Change (MESTECC).

“Our bamboo straw product was launched on October 23, last year and supported by the State Department of Environment (JAS) and (MESTECC).

“With our state-level victory, we hope the people will understand the fragility of our environment and the importance of its protection, especially on the use of plastic and its toxic impacts on humans, animals, waterways, oceans and environment.

“At the same time, we would be bringing the Borneo Bamboo Straw product to the national and international level competition,” she said at the event at the State Education Department building here, Friday.

MiNOS is an annual event organised by the State Education Department (JPN) to recognise and appreciate outstanding achievement in innovation and quality management.

Zulkhaime said the production of the bamboo straw was based on established standards and manually produced in collaboration with the Kg Lambidan community.

He said the bamboo straw product is available at Little Sulap store and Simply Alawa booth at Jesselton Artisan Market or via online on their Instagram account at borneobamboostraw_ and Facebook page SK Lambidan.

“A set of Borneo Bamboo Straw has three straws, a brush washer and a storage bag patterned with Borneo motifs,” he said.

Meanwhile, State Education Department Director Mistirine Radin hopes all educators in the State will continue to explore new ideas, creating innovation based on creative thinking to improve the quality of job performance.

“A total of 36 schools throughout Sabah took part in MiNOS and we whould continue our efforts to promote innovation and cultivate quality management at the PPD and school level,” she said.
