Liew says LDP should explain
KOTA KINABALU: De facto Law Minister Datuk V.K Liew (pic) said that the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), of which he was previously President, should explain whether former premier Datuk Seri Najib Razak gave it funds after he (Liew) was “kicked out” from the party due to a leadership crisis following the 13th General Election (GE13) in 2013.

Liew was LDP President from 2006 until 2013, and is now a Permanent Chairman of Parti Warisan Sabah.

He said LDP also must explain how much money was left in the party’s bank account when he left.

“If they (LDP) allege there was some funding coming for GE13, how much was left in the account. They have to answer this. If they answered like ‘I was not the president at that time, ask Datuk VK Liew’, then it would be easy.

“During the leadership crisis, I was suspended and I had no access to the office as they had locked it and took all the documents. So, I do not know what happened after that…what’s important, this happened in pre-2013.”

He alleged that during the 2013 leadership crisis, “they were very quick running to the bank to change my signatory in the bank without my consent and knowledge as they wanted to touch the money in the bank.

“If they did not have money after they kicked me, from 2013 until 2018, how did they run LDP?”

Liew said he knew for a fact there was money in the fixed deposit account of LDP from the time he left and financial statements passed in their annual general meetings showed there was substantial amount in the account.

Liew was commenting on LDP being among the 41 people and entities that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has filed civil forfeiture applications against to recover RM270 million allegedly taken from the scandal-ridden 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

“Must not forget also that before GE13, any funding from BN central leadership was given in 2012 and 1MDB issue had not surfaced yet.

“If I am not mistaken, the 1MDB issue came about in 2014 and I had already been kicked out from LDP. So whatever happened from 2013 until 2018, the party must explain and be responsible. My question again to them is – did (ex-PM) Najib give them funding throughout the period.

“If they think I misappropriated the money in 2012, then they should take action, but they didn’t do it,” he said.

In 2018 during the GE14, Liew said five candidates of LDP contested in the general election and all lost.

After all were defeated, the party must have money to spend. “So where did the money come from?”

“I believe we can solve this, and I am willing to cooperate with them to clear things as well as with the authorities,” he said.
