“The team nabbed the suspect aged 53 and seized 46,040 cartons of cigarettes and 486 bottles of alcohol found hidden in a room at the house.
“I believe the cigarettes are smuggled in from Indonesia for the East Coast market, especially Sandakan, based on the modus operandi and claims of the suspect,” he said.
He said Esscom also seized a Proton Saga believed used in the smuggling activities.
The suspect and confiscated goods were taken to the Sandakan District Police Headquarters (IPD) for further action and the case is being investigated under Section 13(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967.

“We will carry out special operations continuously in an effort to curb smuggling as well as human trafficking activities,” he said.
