UiTM offers second chance to Sabah bumi students

KOTA KINABALU: The programme called Mengubah Destini Anak Bangsa (MDAB) which is now known as Pre-Higher Education Programme is a second chance for bumiputeras in Sabah to further their studies at the higher level.
Universiti institute Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor Dr Rozita Mohammed, said the contents of the programme are still the same, to provide a space and opportunity to any students of the B40, M40 and B20 groups to further their studies.

“This programme matches the national aspiration, where it is meant to release the bumiputera in Sabah from the clutches of poverty through education. The priceless wealth is academic.
“As an agent of change, it has become a responsibility to give a space and opportunity to genuine Sabahans to study to the highest level with the qualification they have and only at UiTM there is such an opportunity.
“UiTM is the only public higher learning institution that still maintain the main condition that is taking 100 per cent bumiputera in Sabah to further their studies to the highest level. Student can choose whether to take art or science stream because it depends on their personal interest,” she said when paying a courtesy call to Sabah Information Department (JaPen) Director, Norzawiyah Bulka, at Wisma Dang Bandang, Monday.
Its Senior Assistant Registrar, Muhd Zahimi Janai, who was also present, said the MDAB programme is meant to assist SPM leavers who are not qualified to further their study at the diploma level because they did not fulfil the set conditions where they have to go through a pre-diploma course.

In the art stream, there are pre-diploma in commerce which only takes six months to complete while for the science stream there is a pre-diploma in science which takes six months to one-year period.
“The enrolment condition is set very low where for pre-diploma in commerce, one only need to pass SPM with a minimum of three credit, including Bahasa Melayu and a pass in Mathematics or Add Mathematics as well as English.

“While for pre-diploma in science, one need to pass SPM with a minimum of three credits including Bahasa Melayu, History, Mathematics or Add Mathematics and English, plus any one of Physics, Chemical, Biology or Add Science,” he said.
Zahmi said UiTM is presently still short of candidates wanting to enrol into these pre-diploma courses, hoping JaPen can assist in promoting the programme.
“I also believe UiTM is the only public higher learning institution offering this opportunity for people to further study at a very minimal cost but of quality similar to the other universities. The programme has been advertised throughout Sabah but considering the campus is located in Tawau, most of the students are from the East Coast of the State.
“However, enrolment is opened to all Sabahans as long as they fulfilled the set conditions,” he said.
