Kundasang to be net exporter of high-value veggies: Wong
RANAU: Kundasang will be transformed into a net exporter for a variety of high-value crops and vegetables, said State Agriculture and Food Industry Minister Junz Wong.

He said his Ministry together with the farmers and other relevant agencies would work out a plan on how to achieve this noble goal.

“We have also discussed about branding Kundasang products as healthy, green, organic and of good quality,” he said after attending a dialogue between his Ministry and Kundasang vegetable farmers cum Hari Raya open house at Dewan Mini Kundasang.

Wong said Kundasang had the image of producing vegetables with high chemical content and the Ministry was going to change that image.

“The Ministry will be implementing several initiatives to promote and encourage farmers to go green, organic and healthy. Among these are the hydroponic and aquaponic systems which are green, sustainable and healthy.

“It is not easy to achieve all the planned directions, but we believe in the courage to make a change, a true commitment, a high competence and a united co-operation among all parties to realise this dream.”

Wong said the Ministry was responsible for producing an ecosystem that is able to support all parties who will jointly ensure the success of its continuing efforts to strengthen and uplift Sabah’s agricultural sector.

“Firstly, the Ministry must develop the Sabah agro food database, because for the State’s food agro sector, information based on data and data analysis is crucial to the process of forming robust policies and more efficient, effective and efficient administration management.

“This is important because in order to implement the Ministry’s plans accurately and effectively, we need a database for Big Data Analysis. It also helps investors make more informed decisions and plans in agriculture.

“Secondly, work with the State Government and the relevant parties to develop a plan for the development and management of agricultural crops and to find solutions to land issues for crops,” he said.

Wong revealed that among the initiatives in the master plan for Kundasang and also in the agricultural blueprint for Sabah are to introduce and promote the use of organic fertilisers, agrophonic and hydroponic farming, agro funds for youths, agro-related factories, infrastructures and facilities to reach all farmers.

He said the blueprint will be launched in July this year and urged all farmers and fishermen across the State to support and participate in the initiative.
