Padi Gallery is mooted for Tuaran
TUARAN: The Tuaran district, especially in the area of Kiulu, Tamparuli, Topokon, Tenghilan and surrounding areas is well known for its paddy planting activity since long ago.

However, rapidly expanding technology has transformed some of the people’s living patterns to cultivate their crops using modern technology.

In fact, some paddy fields area have also been changed to cultivating other crops due to the change of living pattern or some causes.

In order to preserve the cultural heritage of villagers so that they would not be lost, Sabah Agriculture and Food Industry Ministry Political Secretary Rakam Sijim proposed that a Padi Gallery be created to showcase traditional equipment used to plant rice in accordance with the district which is known for its extensive rice fields.

“This effort will also mean the local cultural heritage will not be lost in this advanced era especially traditional equipment used.”

“In addition, it can be used as a tourist attraction or knowledge for the present generation who only have the opportunity to see modern equipment used to cultivate rice,” he said.

Rakam said this when officiating the Kaamatan Festival at Kg Ulu Bakut / Bakut Muhibbah, here recently.

In conjunction with the celebration, besides children’s and adult telematch, a village level Unduk Ngadau competition was also held.

Touching on the celebration, Rakam said it was able to foster a mutual understanding and cooperation spirit among the villagers.

“Despite the fact that the Kaamatan Festival is celebrated by ethnic Kadazan Dusun, Murut and Rungus (KDMR), but other races also celebrate each other so it becomes something unique for the state,” he said.

Meanwhile, residents of Kg Ulu Bakut / Bakut Muhibbah have asked the government to upgrade basic amenities such as roads and clean water supply.
