Peter: A historic moment for all Sabahans
KOTA KINABALU: Datuk Peter Anthony said it is a historic moment for all Sabahans following Tambadaus’ success in winning the Premier League title this season.

The Sabah Football Association (Safa) acting President was in the stands to witness Sabah beat UiTM 2-1 at Shah Alam Stadium on Tuesday night to confirm their title win with two matches to spare.

“Today is a historic moment for Sabah and also to all supporters of Sabah Tambadaus. This achievement is a great honour, although we started slow in the early stages of the competition, in the end the players were able to rise to the challenges.

“We not only won promotion this season, but also ended a 23-year wait to bring back a league title to Sabah. The success is all due to the committed teamwork from the players and the management, and I would like to thank the supporters who came and gave their support to the Tambadau team,” he said after the match.

On his expectation in the Malaysia Cup competition, he hopes the team can at least repeat their semi-final appearance last year.

“We hope to qualify for the semi-final stage and if possible to progress further.”

He also said they need to plan ahead for the Super League challenge next season and there is a need to strengthen the team, and he is confident that they will get sponsorships.

As for incentives for all players and team officials, he said it will be announced by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal on Saturday when they will be presented the trophy at Likas Stadium before the Kelantan match.

“It is up to Chief Minister Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal to announce but I believe it will be best for all players.”

Meanwhile, former great Datuk James Wong congratulated Peter and the team for their success.

“It was a great achievement and we are proud now that the team are finally getting promoted to the Super League as well as winning the league title.

“On behalf our Ex State Sabah Players Association and also as a former player, I offer my sincere congratulation to Datuk Peter for his leadership and sincere commitment in handling Sabah FA affairs, and we must not forget all the team officials and players as well for their contribution,” he added.

Meanwhile, Justin Ganai is hoping his boys will deliver the three points in their Group A President Cup away tie against Pahang this afternoon (Thursday).

They are chasing a fourth place finish in the group stage to make it to the knockout phase, and they are   currently in fifth place with 21 points, the same as UiTM who are a place above with a match in hand.

They not only need to win the remaining three matches, they are also depending on the result of Selangor United and UiTM FC.

“We target a win against Pahang tomorrow. We lost 1-0 at home in the first round and I hope we can turn the table on them this time.

“All players are in high spirit and the starting line-up will be the same as against Selangor United last week,” he said.

The likely starting line-up are Joslan Aping in goal, Gerald Gadit, Mohd Izzt Aziz. Abd Hanafie Tokyo Abd Hasim and Azmizan Ruslih in defence. The midfield will consist of skipper Mohd AIdil Safee, Sukri Baharun, Zulkifly Harun and Suhaizan Nazmie Etin while Ariusdius Jais and Hamran Peter will lead the attacks. – GL Oh
