SEMPORNA: Seven pump boats were seized during a special operation conducted by the marine police and Fisheries Department at the wet market and waters off here, Wednesday.

Of the figure, three pump boats were found to be unregistered, while four were registered but were manned by non-Malaysians.

Region 4 Sabah Marine Police Commander, ACP Mohamad Pajeri Ali, said the focus of the operation was to check on pump boats (small boats fitted with water pumps as engines), used as a mode sea transport by villagers on the islands and non-citizens in the district that borders southern Philippines.

He said inspections included checking identification documents, permits and licenses. As for the operations carried out at the wet market, it was focused on eradicating fish bombing activities following the recent death of two China tourists and a dive instructor due to fish blasting in Semporna waters. He said no bombed fish or fish-blasting equipment was found during inspections at the wet market.

The operation led to the detention of 10 paperless men who were brought to the Semporna Marine Police Base for further action. “We will be continuing our action to wipe out fish bombing activities in Semporna waters,” ACP Pajeri said, adding that continuous checks would also be carried out in markets to weed out the trading of bombed fish.
