KOTA KINABALU:  Deputy Home Minister Datuk Azis Jamman (pic) reiterated that the Government has and will never allow dubious means of obtaining identification documents.

He assured that stern action will and has always been taken against those responsible for such fraudulent activities.

His assurance came following recent photos of what appeared to be several MyKad application receipts from different applicants but having the same MyKad numbers printed on them.

The photo, which started making its round on social media on Wednesday, called on Sabahans to wake up. It also questioned whether the prints on the receipts were mistakes or done deliberately as a means of giving documents to undocumented immigrants.

“I have time and again said these are the work of those taking advantage of foreigners who believe they can obtain such documents when in reality they are all false.

“It is more saddening that even educated people believe in such fake news,” he said, Thursday.

He also said Datuk Darell Leiking is a federal Cabinet Minister and as Minister, he (Leiking) has the privilege to enquire the number of ICs issued by the Federal Government, especially since taking over the Government.

“If the number looks suspicious, then he has the right to get an explanation. If there is a suspicious rise in the number of citizenship approvals in Sabah, then maybe there is something going on, but I can assure that to date there is none and all those allegations are fake news being spread on social media,” he said.

He again pointed out that the State has no power to issue identification documents to anyone because such power is vested in the Federal Government.

On what actions have been taken by his Ministry against those responsible for fraudulent identification papers in Sabah, Azis cited the case where police arrested a woman suspected of providing such services in Kampung Air not long ago.

“That is one good example of people taking advantage and actions taken by the police to address the issue,” he said, calling on the people to play their part in channelling information should they come across such activities.

“Please inform the police because the culprits are moving all over Sabah to find victims because they know for the fact that undocumented immigrants are desperate to get documents to stay in Sabah,” he said.

He also said some of these irresponsible quarters would even go to the extent of taking photos with leaders and telling people that they have the support from such and such leaders when, in fact, it is not true.

“As leaders, we are also in a dilemma. How do we say ‘no’ to those who wish to take photographs with us, some of them might be genuine in wanting to take photos with us, but there are also those who take advantage of the photos by using it for their dubious activities,” he said.
