Kudat champs after downing Semporna in tight affair

KOTA KINABALU: Kudat emerged champions in the Youth and Sports Minister Cup Under-20 Volleyball Championship which concluded at Sandakan Sports Complex on Sunday.

In a closely fought final, they defeated Semporna in five sets 25-19, 21-25, 20-25, 25-18 and 15-11 to take the title.

Third place went to Beluran with an easy straight sets 25-23 and 25-20 victory over Sandakan in the playoff. Earlier in the semi-finals, Kudat beat Sandakan 25-18,25-22 while Semporna edged Beluran 25-21, 19-25 and 15-7.

Youth and Sports Minister Ginger Phoong Jin Zhe in his speech read by Sandakan Parliamentary Liaison Office Amsi Liew said the programme not only will encourage healthy actives among the youth, it will also help to unearth future talents for the State.

“I understand that the tournament was to prepare districts for the Sabah Games in Keningau in November, but at the same time, programmes such as this will also encourage sporting activities among the youth.

“I hope Sabah State Volleyball Association (SSVA) will carry out more programmes, not only to improve the health and lifestyle of the community but also to unearth talents to form a strong State team to win medals in national competitions.”

The prizes were presented by Sabah Sports Board Chairman Dr KH Tan and also present at the closing ceremony were SSVA President Datuk Alipudin Puyon and Sabah Sports Council development officer Mohd Rezwan Osman.
