LABUAN: The Hot Air Ballloon show and ride here from July 5-7 drawn both bouquets and brickbats. Chairman of the Labuan Indian Chamber of commerce and Industry Datuk Dahlif Singh commended the Labuan Corporation and sponsors for holding the event here for the first time, adding that it was a fun experience for both adults and children.

“The tourism-based event also attracted many from outside the island and certainly gave a welcome boost to the local economy,” added Dahlif.

A local resident Bernerad Wong said: “There were many new faces in town and food outlets enjoyed good sales.”

But, however, not all were pleased. Some complained on the social platform that the charge of RM350 to RM400 for a 20-minute lift in the tethered balloon was high.

One of them wrote: “The charge for the same event held in Johore Bahru last March 1-2 was only RM30 and for children it was free.”

A source at Labuan Corporation explained that the logistic cost to hold the event here was higher and there was also insufficient funds from sponsors.

“Anyway it was the first experience for many to watch the gigantic balloon and not many complained.”

Another complained that the choice of the venue for the event, the Labuan Square, was not suitable.

He said there “was already a lack of parking spaces in town and with the parking spaces closed for use by vendors and stalls aggravated the parking problem in town.”

He noted that there was no direct access to the Financial Park Complex and many were caught unaware and had to make a U-turn into the Lazenda Commercial area, thereby causing bottle-necks at various point in town.

According to him the Labuan Sea Sports Complex would been a better location for the event.
