Putatan project uses smart aqua system

KOTA KINABALU: A hybrid grouper, African catfish and lobster farming project at Bakut View in Putatan has been using the smart aqua farming (SAS) system, believed to be first in the country that applied the latest nano technology.
Putatan Farmers’ Organisation (PKK) Chairman Datuk Dr Arsit Sedi said PCB Biotech Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Permodalan Sabah Bhd, introduced the system, which is a combination of technologies from Japan, Australia and China.

Arsit, who is also PCB Biotech Chairman, said the system’s implementation would reduce the reproductive period and mortality rate, as well as reduce maintenance work and labour.
“This environmentally-friendly SAS system is also cost and time-effective and promotes a high growth rate of either marine or freshwater fish,” he said.
“The system is able to boost the income of fish breeders using the traditional outdoor methods by 1.5 to two times as the prices of ecologically-friendly breeding or organic fishery products are relatively higher.

“Implementing the system in aqua farming occupies a very small water and is pollution-free without harmful additives as there is no need to add any pharmaceuticals, chemicals and antibiotics into the water.
“In this respect, products from this aqua farming method are fresh, healthy and safe to eat,” he told reporters in conjunction with Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Datuk Salahuddin Ayub’s visit at the project site at Kampung Sendil, near here, Sunday.

The event also witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between PCB Biotech, the Putatan Regional Farmers Association (PKK) and EZ Retail.
Arsit said the SAS system used technology from Japan, with lobster seedlings imported from Australia, while the hybrid grouper were for the Chinese market.
Arsit said the MoU signed with the association was for the use of the PPK land that was suitable for the aquaculture project.
