In the first raid about 12.30am on July 12, a 24-year-old man was detained in Kg Air after a bag he was carrying was found to contain drugs worth RM42,500 hidden inside several beverage packets.

Sabah Police Deputy Commissioner Datuk Zaini Jass said 1.746gm of a powdered substance suspected to be drugs, 103.4gm of ketamine and 300 Ecstasy pills were found in the bag,

“Initial investigations show the man works as a cook in Sarawak and he had smuggled the drugs here,” he told a press conference at the State police headquarters in Kepayan, here, Monday.  The man was also found positive for drugs.

Zaini said investigations also showed the man obtained the drugs from a supplier in Miri.

It was learnt that this was the first time drugs were found hidden in assorted powdered fruit juice packages in the State.

In the second raid, police seized 165gm of a powdered substance suspected to be drugs, 226gm of syabu and 66gm of ketamine from a Filipino man.

The man led the team to another apartment also in the same area, where they found 226gm of syabu and 66gm of ketamine.

The drugs in the second raid were worth RM46,840.

Zaini said investigations showed the man obtained his drug supply from a foreigner in Semporna and had smuggled the drugs here via land.

Meanwhile, the department recorded a total of 8,812 arrests for various drug offences so far this year, an increase by 25.8 per cent compared to the same period last year. Of the figure, 590 were drug distributors.
