More courses likely at UMS Sandakan campus
SANDAKAN: The Ministry of Education (MOE) will look into the courses offered at the Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Sandakan campus, to ensure they are relevant to needs.

UMS Sandakan campus located at the Education Hub, Jalan Sungai Batang Mile 10 here, only offers three programmes for students, namely Crop Production, Horticulture and Landscaping, and Live–stock Production.

“These programmes do not meet the needs or choice of students and are also understood to cause many Sandakan children to leave Sandakan to further their education elsewhere after completing high school.

“The Faculty of Sustainable Agriculture of UMS was established in 2011 at Sungai Batang here with three major programmes, which has low enrolment.

“I believe if MOE or UMS intends to coordinate and offer more choices, it will attract more students,” MP Vivian Wong told Deputy Education Minister Teo Nie Ching in Parliament.

In response to Vivian’s call, Teo said that at present there are 398 students pursuing undergraduate, masters and doctoral studies at Universiti Malaysia Sabah Sandakan campus.

Teo said as for now, the UMS Sandakan campus is able to accommodate 1,000 students at a time and MOE is concerned with the issues raised by Vivian. Thus, it would consider her proposal.

MOE is currently focusing on efforts to strengthen the quality of local higher education institutions, as there are 20 public universities, 36 polytechnics and 102 community colleges around Malaysia.
