Four killed in separate mishaps
KOTA BELUD: A  couple was among four people killed in three separate accidents in the State.

In the first incident, the couple was killed when the motorcycle they were on collided with a Honda Civic that entered the opposite lane at Km 2 Jalan Kota Belud-Tuaran, near Kampung Lebak Moyoh, at 8.30am, Wednesday. John Intap, 38, a military personnel, died at the scene while his wife, Mellin Gisos, 37, while being treated in the emergency ward at the Kota Belud hospital.

Kota Belud District Chief Police, Supt Mohd Zaidi Abdullah said the couple was on their way to Kampung Sangkir, Kelawat from the Rumah Keluarga Angkatan Tentera at Kem Paradise.

The 19-year-old driver, who was on his way to a secondary school in the district, lost control of the car, causing the vehicle to enter the opposite lane.

“The incident caused a collision and the motorcycle and the victims being thrown into the drain,” he said. It was found that the Honda Civic driver had no licence. “So far, investigations found that the driver’s driving licence expired several months ago on April 29,” Zaidi said.

A post-mortem will be done on the deceased while investigations will continue under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

In  TAWAU,  an Upper Six male student of a school in Jalan Merotai was killed when his SYM motorcycle was hit by a Myvi at Kg Indah, Jalan Merotai-Tawau at 7am, Wednesday.

District Police Chief, ACP Peter Umbuas said Muhammad Rayyan Bisanga @ Irwan Shah, 18,  was pronounced dead by paramedics on the spot.

He said the Myvi driver, a 27-year-old female civil servant, escaped unhurt.

Peter said initial investigation shows that the accident occurred when the Myvi driver was on her way to her workplace in Tawau town from Felda Umas. She was trying to overtake a lorry but failed and ended up hitting the motorcycle which was coming from the opposite direction.

He said the Myvi skidded to the road shoulder at the right side and landed in the drain while the student was thrown inside the drain before being lifted by the public to the road shoulder.

Peter said early findings found the mishap was due to the Myvi driver’s negligence as she tried to overtake without ensuring the route was safe.

Investigation is carried on under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Meanwhile, in SEMPORNA, a foreigner was killed when a Proton Wira ploughed into his motorcycle at Km 35, Jalan Semporna-Tawau, Tuesday.

Semporna Police Chief Supt Sabarudin Rahmat said the man in his 60s was pronounced dead at the scene following the 3pm accident.

It was learnt that the 46-year-old Proton driver was heading towards Tawau from Semporna when he overtook a car only to end up crashing into the motorcycle which was in front. The impact resulted in the motorcyclist being dragged by the Proton. A 3.12pm distress call via MERS 999 prompted a team of firefighters led by Rosman Gari to the scene. The team retrieved the remains from underneath the car and handed the body to police for further action. Operations ended about 5.06pm.
