Chan-Goh reach semis
Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia’s professional mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying added to their points tally in their quest to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics when they beat Tontowi Ahmad-Winny Oktavina in a closely fought quarterfinal at the Indonesian Open in Jakarta on Friday.

The 2016 Rio Olympics silver medallists booked their berth in the semi-finals by winning 21-11, 14-21, 21-14 in 60 minutes against the Indonesian pair.

The victory also saw Peng Soon-Liu Ying avenge their second round loss to the host pair in the second round of the All-England Championships last March.

For the record, Tontowi partnered Liliyana Natsir to beat Peng Soon-Liu Ying 21-14, 21-12 to win the gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Liliyana, announced her retirement last January following which Tontowi teamed up with Winny.

Peng Soon-Liu Ying, the tournament fifth seeds, will meet second seeds Wang Yi Lyu-Huang Dongping in Saturday’s semi-final.

The Chinese pair advanced to the last four by seeing off another national mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie 21-4, 21-15 in the quarterfinals. – Bernama
