No illegal logging near Papar Dam site: Dept

SANDAKAN: The Sabah Forestry Department (JPS) has denied a report alleging that illegal logging has been happening in Kg Kaiduan, a village located near the proposed Papar Dam site.Sabah’s Chief Conservator of Forests, Datuk Mashor Mohd Jaini (pic), described the claims as baseless and untrue.

He said the department could not prevent any individual or company intending to develop land that is titled and privately owned.
“The department will only take action on handling and controlling production of logs that are being felled from the area provided the applicant has fulfilled all required terms and conditions as well as followed procedures set by the department,” he said in a statement, Friday.
He said this in response to a complaint published in a local paper on July 13 that “illegal logging” is happening near the site of the propose Papar Dam.
The department confirmed that the logs linked to the complaint were actually the result of clearing the said titled land area.

“The clearing work has been given approval with issuance of Form IIB permit from the department for the purpose of timber production.
“Furthermore, a check by the department showed no illegal logging occurred in the Kawang Forest Reserve area. The place as complained is located at a far distance from the forest reserve,” he said.

“Accusations of illegal logging in this area has surfaced repeatedly before this, and (such allegations) have gone viral on social media even though the issue has already been clarified.
“This time, the complainant raised the same issue and associated it with the proposed Papar Dam site without giving the right facts.”
