School hopes to raise RM3.3mil for hall and sports field

KOTA KINABALU: The fund-raising sub-committee of the new SMK St. Francis Convent building is striving to raise RM3.3 million for its school hall and sports field.

SMK St. Francis School Principal Theresa Chong said despite the school’s current facilities, it still is in need of a proper hall as the premise where school assemblies are currently held is exposed to rain and heat.

“Other necessities being planned include a school field and equipped computer labs,” she said in her speech during the official opening ceremony of its new school building, here, Saturday.

Board of Governors Chairperson Mary Florence Gomez, who was present at the ceremony, said the space to build the hall and field is available, but there are no funds yet.

Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Government continued its momentum in managing the economy in line with the commitment and spirit of the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) when it posted record high state revenue of RM6.973 billion last year.

“The funds to build a hall is in the region of about RM3 million and the school field will cost about RM300,000.

“Therefore, our fund raising efforts will have to continue for these facilities,” Mary said.

“We hope the State Government can help us so that the students can have the hall and the field as soon as possible.”

The official opening of the long-awaited RM12 million building was marked as a historic day and another milestone in the school’s development.

State Education and Innovation Assistant Minister Jenifer Lasimbang represented Chief Minister Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal at the ceremony.

Mary said the completion was greatly anticipated because it took 20 years to complete.

“The ground-breaking ceremony for this building took place in 2002. The construction commenced in December 2015 and was completed in November 2018.

“The students started their academic year 2019 in this new premises in January 2019,” she said.

Theresa said the building’s new facilities would create a positive learning environment with its four science labs, library and sufficient number of classrooms to accommodate over 800 students.

“The new spacious environment, together with modern facilities, will no doubt provide a more conducive and comfortable space for all of us,” she said.
