Cops apprehend ‘drain cover thief of Inanam’
KOTA KINABALU: Some 30 iron drain and manhole covers, believed stolen, were recovered from a man by a police patrol unit in Inanam.

The items were found in the rear seat of a car which was parked behind a supermarket, about 4am, last Thursday (July 18). Police also recovered copper circuit breakers, an iron cutter and an iron saw.

The car driver, a 22-year-old local from Telipok, was apprehended, said City Police Chief ACP Habibi Majinji on Sunday.

The man’s accomplice, however, managed to flee.

Police are now looking for the accomplice identified as Amon, a local in his 20s, from Telipok.

The case is being investigated for theft, which carries up to seven years’ jail or fine, or both, on conviction.

Habibi said a complaint was lodged by a resident in Inanam after finding the iron manhole cover in front of his house missing, about 9.30am, on July 18.

The resident claimed to have last seen the cover about 8pm on July 17.

Those with information pertaining to the case are urged to channel contact investigating officer Sergeant Afizan Kasijan at 019-8601230.
