Tawau set to get Brunei tourists
TAWAU: Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister, Datuk Christina Liew, urged tourism industry players in the district to ready themselves to receive more tourists as the Royal Brunei Airlines will begin its direct flight service to Tawau soon.

She said she was informed about this when she contacted the officer who manages the Brunei–Tawau flight route, adding that, however, the date for the start of the service has yet to be fixed.

“There will be direct fligh) but the date is yet to be fixed. Probably September, October or November this year.

“We at the Ministry welcomes the direct flight service, especially in assisting the Cuti-Cuti Tawau 2019 programme,” Liew said after officiating the closing of E-Padaidi Bugis Sabah (KAReBA) Carnival held at the Tawau Municipal Council (TMC) Square.

The Deputy Chief Minister said the Government supports cultural and tourism-based events that not only benefit the people but also spur the local economic activities.

Liew is confident the event also involves other ethnic groups and thus strengthen the unity among the people in the State. “We need to reject racial-based provocation meant to create tension and disunite races in the State, as this will not bring any benefit to Sabah and the people,” she said.

Earlier, KAReBA Director I, Dr H Mukhtar Alwi, in his welcoming speech said about 15,000 people attended the three-day carnival, exceeding their expectation of 10,000.

He said the KAReBA 2019 also has the potential to be made another tourism product for Tawau to draw  tourists, including from outside Sabah, apart from being a platform for assisting the business people to generate income as well as for the preservation of the cultural heritage.
