Dept aims to elevate quality of education via PAK21
KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Education Department aims to elevate the quality of education through an immersive 21st Century Learning (PAK 21) experience relating to Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (Steam).

This is in line with today’s digital era and Steam-driven economy, where it is becoming increasingly important for students to be competent in such environment.

Its Director Mistirine Radin said the Education Ministry’s goal is to transform the education system by providing equal access to quality education of an international standard.

“This is a challenge we have to face amidst creating a learning environment that is engaging and meaningful to the students in regard of real life situations,” she said at the 21st Century Learning Carnival at SM Lok Yuk, here, Saturday.

Under the PAK21, Project-Based Learning (PBL) was introduced in schools as an alternative teaching approach that would enhance a student’s learning experience.

Mistirine said the PAK21 initiative has made progress in recent years and was pleased to see students from various schools exhibiting their products that were a result of PBL.

“In 2017, the PAK21 initiative was still in its infant stage.

“Today at this carnival, we are seeing the results of PAK21 and I am happy to see the students’ products here.”

She also hoped the students would take what they’ve learned from their PBL experience to emerge as real-life entrepreneurs.

“It is my hope that from this initiative, it will fulfil the Key Performance Index (KPI) goal of the Education and Innovation Ministry, that is to increase the number of entrepreneurs,” she said.

The 21st Learning Carnival was organised by the Principal Association Sabah to showcase PBL work and innovation products developed by students, as well as to exhibit innovative teaching tools.

The exhibition was participated by 39 primary and secondary schools as well as colleges and universities from over 10 districts around Sabah.  Also present were school principals and teachers from various schools as well as education officers.

21st Century Learning refers to the Ministry Education’s initiative of a student-centric learning process that is steered by five elements – communication, collaboration, critical thinking, creativity and values and ethics.

It defines knowledge and competency that students should embody to be competitively relevant and well equipped to take on the challenges of 21st Century.
