Durians galore but not enough for Fest
RANAU: The long-awaited durian season is back here again and the powerful smell of the local favourite could be detected everywhere.

Piles of the thorny fruit can be seen at the open market as well as roadside stalls.

A check at the Ranau fruits and vegetables market showed a variety of durians on sale, including the favourite D24, Udang Merah and the famous Musang King variety.

The highly sought-after varieties, however, do not come cheap.

For one kilogramme of the Musang King variety, it cost RM50, while the Udang Merah variety was seen selling at RM8 per kg.

Those who are not picky and would settle for any type of durians can be satisfied with one plastic “tapau” (package) filled with a mixed variety of durians for RM10 or RM15, depending on the size.

Other varieties include D24 Super, Mas Pahang, D2, D10, Durian Susu, Durian Pisang, Dalit, Sukang, Susu Kuning, Maraang, Tikar, D99 and others, including those growing wild in the forest.

Meanwhile, many hawkers and durian planters here feel that August or September is appropriate for holding a district-level Durian Festival as the supply of durians now is sufficient and expected to decrease by end of October.

Most of them say that since the beginning of August, the supply of durian has increased and is sufficient to hold a Durian Festival to provide an opportunity for farmers as well as sellers in the district to market their durians.

However, District Officer Mohd Yassin Ibrahim, when contacted, said based on feedback from the Agriculture Department, the production of durians this time around is not as high as in previous years, and this makes it unsuitable to hold a Durian Festival this year.
