Kuala Lumpur: Malaysian Athletics Federation (MAF) former president Karim Ibrahim (pic) should not use the title ‘Datuk’ as long as he has not attended the investiture ceremony, said Pahang state secretary Datuk Seri Dr Sallehuddin Ishak on Friday.

Sallehuddin gave this clarification when asked to comment on a report lodged on July 4 at the Travers police station here by a 57-year-old businessman who alleged that the title which Karim used was not valid, and had urged for stern action to be taken against the former MAF president who is believed to have used the title verbally or in written form on various occasions, including when engaging with the media.

Karim had been offered the title on July 26, 2011 but until Friday, had not been conferred with the honour at an investiture ceremony, said Sallehuddin who added, “as such, he cannot use the title until it is conferred upon him”.

Meanwhile, Karim said that while he was unaware of the police report, he knew that there were parties who were using the issue of the title to smear his reputation since the campaign for the MAF elections on June 30, when he lost his two-term presidency, held since 2014, to then deputy president Datuk S.M. Muthu by a margin of three votes (18-21).

On the title, Karim who still holds the presidency for the Perak Athletics Association said: “It is not fake…I was supposed to go and collect it, but I did not go. I do not know if there is a clause saying I cannot use it. If the Palace says cannot use, I won’t use.” – Bernama
