Kota Kinabalu: A 25-year-old thief preying on tourists and locals was detained in front of Kinabalu Golf Club entry gate in Tanjung Aru, on Monday.

He arrest follows an incident where two British tourists witnessed him stealing the bag of a Chinese tourist and alerted her about it, said City Police Chief ACP Habibi Majinji.

He said the victim asked her tour guide to help locate the suspect and found him at the beach parking lot with her belongings. “He was then apprehended by policemen,” he said. The suspect was also tested positive for drugs.

Upon conviction, the suspect can be charged under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft, where he is liable for a jail term not exceeding seven years, or fine, or both.

For second time offence or thereafter, he could be punished with imprisonment and fined or whipped.
