Kota Kinabalu: Kota Kinabalu dethroned Tambunan to win the overall title in the 65th Mayor Cup Sabah Open Boxing tournament, which ended at the Luyang Multi-purpose hall on Saturday.

The same team that had earlier captured the President Cup held at the same venue in April, again showed their prowess in the ring by taking four golds, two silvers and three bronzes to top the medal tally.

Their gold medals were won by Khairul Azim Naseer (56kg), Johari Daniel Gray (60kg), Andrian Junior James (64kg) and Mohd Izzat Kamal (91kg).

In second place were Armed Forces with three gold, two silver and three bronze medals with the gold won by Mohd Sukandar (49kg), Mohd Hazlan Mat Jusoh (52kg) and Mohd Shahrul Hakim (75kg).

Defending champions Tambunan had to settle for third place after winning only two gold medals through Minuddin Justinus (69kg) and Jennyson Maidun (81kg), as well as two silvers and one bronze.

Tambunan District Boxing Association President Fabian Peter, who had earlier vowed to defend their title, was disappointed with the outing and apologised for their failure.

“I have to say sorry to the people of Tambunan for failing to defend the title. We tried our very best and unfortunately we have to admit that the other teams are obviously better during the competition.

“It was a very good lesson for our boxers. We need to train harder and prepare early next year and try to win back the crown,” he said.

Meanwhile, Penampang came fourth with one gold and three bronzes followed by Tongod with two silvers and two bronzes and Tuaran with one silver and six bronzes.

Some 30 boxers took part in the three-day competition, and City Hall Enforcement Department Director Abdul Mukti Hj Muchlish was the guest of honour representing Mayor Datuk Nordin Siman at the closing ceremony.

Also present were Sabah Boxing Association President Datuk Orlando Harumal, MSN Director Asneh Mohd Noor with other top officials and guests.
