TAWAU: Four people sustained injuries when the express bus they were travelling in crashed and  keeled over at Mile 15 Jalan Apas, Tuesday.

The bus carrying 35 passengers was heading towards Bandar Sri Dinah Bus Terminal, here, from Kota Kinabalu when the 5am mishap took place.

Tawau Police Chief, ACP Peter Umbuas, identified the victims as three men and a woman, aged between 30 and 54, adding that they sustained head injuries, sprained right hand and back injuries.

He said three of the injured are passport holders, while one, with the back injury is a 30-year-old local man.

The 54-year-old bus driver escaped unscathed.

Initial investigations showed that the bus driver lost control  while negotiating a bend at Mile 15 during heavy rain.

The impact caused the bus to skid and crash over the road divider and into two electric posts before it keeled over 20 metres away.

Firefighters from the Tawau Fire and Rescue Station arrived at the scene after responding to a 5.15am distress call.

The team applied early aid on the injured before sending them to the hospital. The operation ended about 6.21am.
