KUCHING: Education must evolve to meet the challenges of an ever-changing world.

To this end, said Sarawak Minister of Education, Science and Technological Research Datuk Seri Michael Manyin, the English language classroom is a perfect setting for promoting creativity and critical thinking whilst inculcating the right values.

“It therefore makes complete sense of English language teachers to be deliberating on education for the future,” he said when launching the 28th Malaysian English Language Teaching Association (Melta) Conference here, Tuesday.

He said English language plays a vital role as it functions as master key that unlocks the doors of knowledge and skills.

“It is an undisputed fact that many of the academic books and references that we have here are in English. For example, online references and sources in social sites such as YouTube which provide and contribute to the development of our knowledge and skills are predominantly in English,” he said.

Also present were Melta President Prof Ganakumaran Subramaniam and Raja Puan Besar Perak, Raja Nazhatul Shima Sultan Idris Shah.

Meanwhile, Raja Nazhatul Shima said Artificial Intelligence (AI) would very likely in future play an important role in Society 5.0.

“In fact, we already see evidence of this today. AI already plays a prominent role in education and it is time for us to more readily embrace AI in English Language Teaching. Refocused efforts are needed to improve the quality of education,” she said.

In another development, Manyin said the rehabilitation project for rundown schools in Sarawak would commence as soon as the state government received approval from the Finance Ministry.

For the first phase of the project, five schools out of 37 that had been identified, would be given priority, he said.

He also disclosed that the state government had repaid RM350 million to the federal government, which would in turn be utilised for the project. – Bernama
