20,000 expected at arts festival in Labuan

LABUAN: The Borneo Arts Festival (BAF) 2019 is expected to draw in a some 20,000 visitors to the duty-free island from Sept 27-29.

The annual programme listed in Labuan’s Calendar of Events will feature a variety of events lined up which offers a total cash prize of more than RM100,000 to participants of the activities.

Labuan Corporation (LC) chief executive officer Dr Fary Akmal Osman said the three-day agenda organised by its department of tourism, culture and arts in collaboration with government agencies, private sector and NGOs here, will be held at Financial Park.

“The highlight of this event is that it not only focuses on the artworks, but also showcases all aspects of visual arts which capture the uniqueness of the Bornean culture such as handicrafts, traditional food, contemporary music and dance,” she told reporters, Thursday.

Among the events lined up includes a Malaysian Traditional Costume Fashion Show, a creative ethnic dance battle, ‘Bermukun Seborneo’ competition, and a visual arts competition (Borneo Doodle Battle, Cosplay Competition, Catan Batik, Henna, Mural).

Some 130 exhibition booths will also be up for display during the programme. Of the total, 50 booths would feature visual arts exhibits while the other 80 booths would be of handicrafts and agro-based exhibitions.

The events are set to pull in participants from across the country as well as the likes of Brunei, Indonesia and the Philippines.

Dr Fary said the programme aims to provide support for the development of the art and cultural heritage in our society and acts as a catalyst for promoting “Art and Culture Tourism” in Labuan.

“Through this events, it is hoped that unnoticed talents could be discovered, and the public could recognise creativity, instil aesthetics and appreciate the beauty of art and culture.

“Many could also build and enhance networking and collaborations among all players involved, be it directly or indirectly,” she added.

The programme is also said to be a step to approach the youth in being more actively involved in such beneficial events which could open up career opportunities.
