City Hall will be keeping a close eye on eateries at the Kolam Commercial Centre, in the Hilltop area of Luyang to ensure that used cooking oil is not being flushed into the sewer line there.A spokeswoman for the agency said its health inspectors would be asked to step up checks of the grease traps in these premises.

“We hope in this way to impress upon restaurant and coffeeshop owners the need to properly dispose of the unwanted cooking oil from their activities,” she said.
“It is crucial that they get the message as the sewer pipes have been clogged with bits of congealed grease more and more often off late, causing some of the manholes for the building to overflow.”
Sewage from these structures was found to be spilling onto the road on one side of the Centre for several days prompting inspections from agency’s Engineering and Health and Environment Departments (HED) Departments.
A spokesman for the Engineering Department said its workers discovered that grease had congealed inside the sewer pipes connected to affected manhole.

He said the sewer line was cleared after City Hall was made aware of the problem.
“We are working together with our colleagues from the HED to monitor the goings-on at the centre.”

HARITH of LIkas was dismayed to find effluent escaping from the manholes in the parking lots on the road beside the Centre.
“By the time I realised why the road was wet, it was already too late as I had got down from my car and stepped into the soiled water,” he said. He voiced his displeasure about foul smell coming from the effluent.
“Not only is it a nuisance, but it is also most unhealthy given the presence of several eateries here.
“The food and drinks are prepared at these premises could easily be contaminated by these noxious fumes.”
He had gone to the area with some friends for dinner over the Hari Raya Korban long weekend when he noticed this problem.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

The resident provided Hotline with the location of the overflowing manholes. This information was forwarded to City Hall. (SS)
