Rubbish woe at Taman Malakun
Scores of rubbish inside and around the bin centre in Taman Malakun recently.
Although the rubbish collection schedule in Taman Malakun at Jalan Ramayah, Penampang, was done thrice a week, it  was never enough to cater the amount of refuse being discarded to the bin centre there by the adjacent villagers. A ratepayer in that neighbourhood recently complained about the piles of rubbish that scattered around the bin centre as the smell of the kitchen waste had attracted dogs to disperse the plastic bags in search for food leftovers. The latter also said the routine garbage collection for the neighbourhood had lapsed for five days recently. A Council spokesman, when contacted, said the collection schedule for the housing estate is done every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. “The amount of rubbish from that bin centre is too many to the point that there is not enough room in our compactor to accommodate rubbish from other rating areas,” he added. He said its site investigation revealed that the bin centre was mostly used by the nearby villagers. “We have no qualm in emptying the bin and clearing the refuse left outside the bin centre by the villagers but we do have issue when we are unable to collect the backlog all at once,” he added. A resident there who requested for anonymity, told Hotline on Aug 14, that stray dogs from the neighbouring villages have been seen rummaging through the contents of the piles of plastic bags lying outside the communal bins. “The mess that scattered on the ground will be worse when people continue to throw their rubbish in that bin centre despite the fact that it is brimming with rubbish,” she added. Apart from that, she said the pungent smell emanating from the exposed kitchen waste that have been dispersed on the roadway is intolerable as well. “It is not healthy for anyone to be exposed in such environment on a daily basis,” she lamented, who hoping the Council will act on it soon as possible.   (OV)
