Labuan econ growth leads to significant rise in freight traffic

LABUAN: The new board line-up of the Labuan Port Authority (LPA) was Thursday briefed on the history and achievements of the Labuan’s containerised port of Labuan Liberty Wharf.Labuan Liberty Port Management Sdn Bhd (LLPM) Chief Executive Officer Datuk Seri Mohd Alias Abd Rahman said the briefing was the first since LPA’s new board members were appointed this year.

“We now move forward by inviting them to ponder on ways and means that LLPM and LPA can cooperate for mutual benefit.
“We can draw on each other’s strengths and this will turn Labuan’s containerised port stronger to face increasing global challenges and new paradigms confronting the port and shipping sector,” he said.
Alias said the briefing also touched on LLPM’s overall system in handling the port operations and the challenges it had gone through for the last 20 years.
He said in the last 10 years, the economic growth due to the booming oil and gas in Labuan has led to a significant increase in freight traffic.

The LPA’s new board line-up was completed in June following the inclusion of two new members, namely Member of Parliament for Labuan Datuk Rozman Isli and Labuan Corporation Deputy Chief Executive Officer Rithuan Ismail.

The others were five existing board members, namely Simsudin Sidek (Labuan PKR Chief), Zulkurnain Ayub (LPA General Manager), Datuk Seri Saripuddin Kasim (the Ministry of Federal Territories Secretary-General), and Mohamad Halim Ahmed (Ministry of Transport) and Chairman Chan Foong Hin.
The new board line-up was appointed in January this year.
Commenting on the briefing, Chan said: “It was a briefing that we have been waiting for, and today we’ve got a clearer picture and better understanding the operations and challenges faced by the operator of LLPM,” he told to Bernama.
He said the operations of the Labuan Liberty Wharf terminal (Labuan’s containerised port) was tendered out this month and a site visit was conducted on Aug 13.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

“I was surprised to note that 32 keen local and national players visited the site to see themselves the facilities and operations at the Labuan Liberty Wharf,” he said.
Chan said the evaluation on the tender process would be done by LPA sub-committee and the decision should be made within three months. – Bernama
