Tenom: The Persatuan Pengusaha Durian dan Buah Buahan Tropika (Masda) welcomed the suggestion by Agriculture and Food Industry Minister Datuk Junz Wong to create an agriculture produce collection centre in Kota Kinabalu.

Its Chairwoman, Sharon Voo, said the move will make it easy for farmers to market their agriculture produce to the international level as well.

“We are also happy that the said centre will be equipped with various facilities including quarantine room, cold storage, packaging and so on so that the agriculture produce remain fresh and not damage before they are exported to foreign countries. “There is a great demand from China for Musang King durian. But the farmers are cautious in terms of quality management because it can affect the market if this aspect is not given attention,” she said in response to Junz’s suggestion after he officiated at the launching of the Tenom-level Durian and Tropical Fruits Fest held at Tenom Coffee Valley, here, Sunday.

Masda Deputy Chairman, Gerard Baxter, meanwhile said he has been tasked to ensure all farmers will make sure the quality of their fruits would be good before being sent to the market. During the launching of the event, Junz had said the centre will also be a hub to deliver the agriculture produce to the international market.

The move is to reduce dependency on middlemen who disrupt the market price and income of farmers, he said.
