Labuan to host four major events next month
LABUAN: Labuan is to host four major events next month which have tourism officials all geared up to face “a gruelling but exciting and joyful” time to ensure everything runs smoothly.

The events are the inaugural International Kite Festival at the Palm Beach Resort and Spa from Sept 6 to 8; Bird Park Festival at the Bird Park on Sept 7 & 8 and Borneo Arts Festival and Labuan Rugby Carnival to be held simultaneously from Sept 27 to 29 at the Financial Park Complex and Labuan Square, respectively.

The highlight of the Bird Park Festival is the Labuan Bird Park Eco Ultra Marathon featuring local, national and international extreme enthusiasts.

A total of 50 teams, including from Brunei Darussalam, Sri Lanka, Singapore and Indonesia, have registered to compete in the international rugby tournament, according to the Labuan Rugby Association.

Several of the teams will feature international players from Fiji, England and Australia.

Labuan Corporation Department of Tourism, Culture and Arts director Mahathir Abd Hamid said the major events are expected to draw crowds of more than 30,000, especially from mainland Sabah and Sarawak as well as Brunei Darussalam.

“It is huge. It is quite a big season we will ever be involved in. It is the largest ever season for the Labuan calendar of events for September as the events are running from the first week till the month-end,” he told Bernama today.

He said the events are part of the activities of the Labuan tourism players, both the government and NGOs, to help boost tourism on the island.

“Looking at the events running simultaneously at different venues, you know it is going be a gruelling session … it is going to be tough, mentally and physically, but it will be beneficial to our island as it will have economic spillovers.

“We can greet each other now (with NGOs). We did not have a connection before, but now we sit at the roundtable to plan and run the events together and have a good partnership. It will make a difference,” Mahathir said. – Bernama
