Molesting Japanese tourist in bus

KOTA KINABALU: A mini bus driver was charged in the Magistrate’s Court, here, Monday with molesting a Japanese tourist recently.

Mandulin Affendi, 30, pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Jessica Ombou Kakayun to committing the offence against the woman, in her 40s, at 3pm on Aug 11, in a mini bus at Bukit Bendera area.

The charge under Section 354 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to 10 years or fine or whipping or with any two of such punishment, upon conviction.

The court set Sept 17 for case management and released Mandulin on a bail of RM3,000 in two sureties.

Inspector Lim Swee Beng prosecuted while Mandulin was represented by counsel PJ Perira.

In another Magistrate’s Court, a foreigner was fined RM10,000 or four months jail for operating online gambling activity.

Rasid Hassim admitted before Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie to committing the offence at 11.20pm on July 26, here.

Rasid, who was unrepresented, requested for a lenient sentence.

He had committed an offence under Section 4B(a) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 which provides for a fine of between RM10,000 and RM100,000 and shall also be punished with a jail term of up to five years, upon conviction.

The court ordered Rasid be referred to the Immigration Department after paying the fine or serve the jail term and also ordered the seized RM457 be forfeited by the government.

Meanwhile, a 25-year-old man was jailed 18 months for having a stolen laptop and a stolen iPad.

Lias Datu Omar pleaded guilty to having the items at 1am on July 3 in a house at Taman D’Sri Gayang in Tuaran.

The offence under Section 411 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to five years or fine or both, upon conviction.

Unrepresented, Lias applied for a lenient sentence saying that he is supporting his mother.
