KOTA KINABALU: Joffey Jolly led Sabah to dethrone defending champions Putrajaya and clinch the overall title at the National Armwrestling Championship 2019 organised by Malaysia Armwrestling Federation (MyArm) at Tan’Yaa Hotel in Cyberjaya on Saturday.

They captured a total of 10 gold, 12 silver and seven bronze medals and the 61 total accumulated points saw them finishing ahead of Putrajaya, who only collected a total of 48 points with Sarawak in third place on 31 points.

Joffey was the toast of the Sabah team with two gold medals and he also won the Senior Men Right Hand open category.

Sabah’s gold medal winners were Alvian Ally (Junior Right Hand 60kg), Micky Cheah Kok Fui (Junior U-21 Right Hand 70kg), Jonathan Junin (Junior U-21 Left Hand +80kg), Frankie Petrus (Junior U-21 Right Hand +80kg), Jolly Johnson (Master Left Hand 90kg), Joffey Jolly (two - Senior Men Left Hand 78kg, Senior Men Right Hand 78kg), Danneld Eku (Junior U-21 Right Hand 80kg), Esmond Ampilah (Master Right Hand +90kg) and Michael Ford (Senior Men Right Hand +105kg).

Sabah Armwrestling Association deputy president Jolly Johnson, who captained the team, was delighted with their achievement.

“I am very satisfied with winning the national championship, as we were faced with numerous obstacles before the championship, but despite that, we still managed to bring home the title.

“In fact, we could have won more gold but several of our athletes could not make it due to financial constraints.

“The rest of our athletes that made the trip were forced to dig deep into their own pockets to pay for their own expenses because we were not getting any financial support.

“I wish to congratulate all our pullers for a job well done. They deserved to be given a pat on their back for the efforts and the sacrifices they made,” he added.
