All Saints shine at  scientific writing
KOTA KINABALU: SM All Saints emerged victorious at the first national level Young Inventors Journal (YIJ) scientific paper writing competition in Kuala Lumpur on Aug 17.

It was the only team representing Sabah.

Organised by the Association of Science, Technology and Innovation (Asti) in collaboration with the Ministry of Water, Land and Natural Resources, the Young Inventors Journal (YIJ) is a free online research journal that is earmarked towards younger generation to increase their interest, get involved and immersed in learning  science, technology and innovation.

The journal hopes to expose the young generation to new ideas and inventions.

The theme of this year’s competition was “How to Conserve Water” for students aged between 13 and 18 years old.

There were 83 applications through the submission of abstracts from schools all over the country.

Some 44 complete journal papers (5 papers from the Individual Category and 39 papers from the Group Category) were selected and submitted for evaluation by 27 judges.

Through the evaluation process, three best journal papers for each category were shortlisted.

The winning Sabahan team comprised Danial Lau (Form 5) and Jeriel Yong (Form 5) supervised by the school’s teacher advisor Susan Chin with a research paper titled “Applications of Permeable Pavement” and was the Champion.

They received certificates and a RM3,000 cash prize.

Susan said perseverance, focus and discipline is the driving force that ensures consistency in the team’s performance from the start. She could not believe the outstanding achievement obtained as they had met with strong competitors all over the country.

Dr Mary Gambidau, the principal of SM All Saints, said the team had brought pride and glory to the school and the state.

She attributed the success to the dedication and hard work of students and teachers with the full support of parents.

She hoped the success would inspire other students to have more creative and innovative ideas to help overcome environmental issues.
