Protruding nails pose danger to motorists
A PETAGAS driver has voiced her concern about the traffic hazards posed by the nails which are jutting out, in places, on a bridge along the road leading to Kg Sekambu.

ELISS said she experienced punctured tyres of her car while going over the bridge one night recently.

“I had to change my tyres late at night in the middle of nowhere,” she lamented.

“New tyres aren’t cheap and money doesn’t grow on trees.”

She shared her frustrations with one of her neighbour’s who told her that another motorist had experienced the same problem while crossing the bridge a night earlier.

“We pay assessment to the District Council so that this agency can improve the amenities in the area including this bridge.

“Honestly, the body should consider compensating us for the damaged caused to our vehicles.”

She said it was fortunate that she was alert and it had not been raining when her tyres blew.

“Otherwise, I might have driven off the bridge into the river and been hurt or worse.”

Eliss said she had appealed to the Council to have the bridge upgraded over a year ago.

“If the agency is unwilling to do this, then it should consider providing us with an alternative route to access the village.

“The bridge is the one and only means we have of reaching our homes as we cannot pass through the school nearby.”

The driver provided Hotline with the location of the bridge which was forwarded respectively to the Putatan District Council and District Office.

A spokesman for the latter said it would have to verify the motorist’s claims.

“Our staff will check on the condition of the bridge,” he said.

“If the dangers presented by the nails protruding from it are true, then we will arrange to have this problem dealt with as soon as possible.

“This will be done for the safety and benefit of drivers who use the bridge.”

A Council spokesman said a check of its records revealed that those staying in the village were indeed being charged assessment.

“Nevertheless, the bridge in question is not under our jurisdiction,” he said. (SS)
