Breastfeeding: Tambunan to set the lead

TAMBUNAN: Tambunan District Office is taking the initiative as the first department in the district to provide a comfortable room for mothers to breastfeed their babies.

District Officer Jumain Abdul Ghani said this when officiating at the Keningau-level World Breastfeeding Week celebration at the community hall.

“In light of this, the District Office is taking the initiative to provide a special room for breastfeeding mothers, whether it is for the use of office staff or mothers who come here with their baby,” he said. He said imagine if a mother were to breastfeed in an open area such as tamu, the condition is not only dusty and hot for the mother and child but also causes unease among members of the public.

“I ask the heads of departments in this area to provide a comfortable special room for breastfeeding mothers and maybe one day the baby being breastfed will be our leader in the future.

“What the District Office is doing is expected to be followed by other departments. I take the example of the District Education Office which is a large department with large schools and it is no exception that the Tambunan District Council is providing a comfortable room for mothers to breastfeed their babies,” he said.

He wants Tambunan as well as the interior areas to increase the number of government departments providing room for breastfeeding, especially for civil servants in the respective departments in the Upper Interior. Jumain said new-borns should be breastfed until the baby is six months to two years old.

“Therefore, mothers should be given proper nutrition and stay away from food that can be detrimental to their health as they will not only harm the mother but also affect the health of the baby,” he said.

Jumain also hoped that awareness programmes on the matter can be intensified.

Also present were the Keningau Area Health Officer representative Dr Ronald Robinson, Tambunan District Health Officer representative Dr Rohana Abdul Razak, Programme Chairperson Flora Tajin, Tambunan Community Development Leader Basal Bullah, District Chief OKK Adin Manggala, heads of State and Federal government departments, community leaders and mothers.
