Tuaran: Owners of affordable houses who rent them out are advised to return the units to the Government before action is taken, said Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Jaujan Sambakong.

He said the Sabah Government through the Ministry of Local Government and Housing has received reports, with proof and identified the owners.

“We are in the process of implementing a ‘clean-up’ against all these offenders, before appropriate action is taken against them.

“The owners are advised to surrender the affordable homes to the Government so that we can provide them to families in need.

“Have sympathy for those families who do not have houses to stay. Anyone is free to look for ways to increase their wealth but do not take advantage based on non-halal sources,” he said.

Jaujan, who is also Local Government and Housing Minister, said this when met after officiating a gotong-royong programme at PPR Telipok Ria in conjunction with the month-long Merdeka celebration, here.

He said the inspection process is being implemented not only in this area but also throughout the State.

“There is a possibility that element of abuse or mismanagement could be one of the reasons why many locals in Sabah are homeless.

“The Government’s efforts to provide affordable housing to the people will not be achieved due to irresponsible actions by certain quarters which are wrong and against the law. Thus, they must be ready to face the music,” Jaujan said.

He said Sabah is one of the states that received high funding to build affordable housing in the country but still not enough.

In another development, he said cleanliness is important for the people towards complementing the Government’s efforts in developing the country, especially Sabah.

“We need people to be in good health when developing the nation by ensuing cleanliness in their houses, food and living environment, and so on.

“It is useless if a person is rich but not healthy. In my opinion, a clean and healthy environment is not a sign of a nation’s progress, but a symbol of the nation’s advancement,” Jaujan said.

According to him, solid waste also needs to be disposed of in the areas provided instead of into the drains which cause flash floods to occur due to the blocked water flow in the drains.

He said the drainage facilities and rubbish bins have been provided and, thus, the people need to think wisely use the facilities.
