Labuan couple’s way of expressing love for country
LABUAN: A pre-Merdeka couple have their own way of  making their sacrifice and expressing love for the country.

Since it is already past their time for them to join the freedom fighters in freeing  the country from the colonials, they want to keep the spirit of patriotism alive and make the National Day celebration an auspicious and memorable occasion.

And for this year’s 62nd National Day celebration, the couple went to a nearby forest to collect bamboo stems and collected unwanted plastic bottles, as well as forking out from their own pockets for other materials, to build a structure of the Jalur Gemilang, the national flag.

At the exit to their matrimonial home in Kampung Sungai Miri, Johnny Jamarin, 59, and Rosnah Taib there is also 10-foot high arch built to welcome visitors to their house, where every inch of  the walls have been decorated with the Jalur Gemilang.

In the compound, there are two gazebos displaying the pictures of previous prime ministers of Malaysia, and also a structure of a huge flag, built using bamboo and more than 1,200 used plastic bottles and painted with the colours of Jalur Gemilang.

Villagers and motorists who passed-by the house are awed by the couple’s hard work and mesmerised  by the air of gaiety at the couple’s home from the decoration and colours of the Jalur Gemilang. Some of them stopped-by to take photographs of them in the compound.

Johnny and Rosnah are among participants in  the “Keceriaan” Competition organised by  the Labuan Information Department in conjunction with the 62nd Merdeka Month celebration.

The couple first joined the competition in 2016 and won first prize for the house category in 2016.

“Since then, I joined the competition every year. Many of my friends say I’m just wasting my time  and energy, but to us, it is not just winning the prize. We love doing it. The feeling of satisfaction you get after doing it.

“Although I was born after Merdeka, I can imagine the sacrifices made by the freedom fighters and the excitement when the first shout of Merdeka was heard.

“It is with this in mind that inspire us to do this, ” said Rosnah when met by Bernama.

Rosnah and Johnny took nearly two months to complete their project for this year’s Merdeka celebration. – Bernama
