Commissioner of Oaths is under probe

TUARAN: A Commissioner for Oaths who also owns a private clinic in Taman Telipok Ria is under investigation for alleged misuse of power.
Police revealed this at the Tuaran District Office’s Administration Division, here, Tuesday.

The man, who was also present to testify, allegedly failed to verify the identity of the applicant through the identification document of the applicant before submitting the confirmation stamp and failed to maintain the oath-taking register.
State Commercial Crime Investigation Department Head, Supt G Moses Govindarajoo, said they conducted a thorough investigation after receiving a report from the public in September last year.
“Preliminary probe found that the man’s first offence was to give confirmation stamp to the Declaration Form without checking the identity or details of the applicant whether local or not as a means of facilitating dealings between the applicant and the government.
“The second offence, the man is found to have failed to maintain a register book where he did not register the form of application details which received the confirmation stamp,” he said.

He said the suspect committed an offence under Rule 11 (2) of the Commissioner of Oaths 2018 and Rule 14 (1) of the Commissioner of Oaths 2018 in which the suspect could be sentenced under Rule 20 of the Commissioner of Oaths 2018.

“If convicted, the suspect may be fined up to RM1,000 or jailed up to six months or both,” he said, adding that police were informed that the suspect has been called to the Tuaran Magistrate’s Court on Sept 10 for the case mention.

Meanwhile, members of the media waited for about 30 minutes outside the office while waiting for information from the Tuaran District Assistant Officer (Administration), Awang Mohd Yusoff.
