RM14m to repair Sabah PPR homes

PAPAR: The federal Rural Development Ministry (KPLB) has set a target of 60 per cent implementation for the Industrialised Building System (IBS) on Housing Programme for the Hardcore Poor (PPRT) across Malaysia as a “finance friendly” method for home construction.

Minister Datuk Seri Rina Mohd Harun said such method will not only capable of reducing the timework for the future and ongoing PPRT projects but will also save costs.

She said of the 60 per cent target, Sabah will not be excluded and funds worth RM14million will be channeled not only to repair at least 1,730 homes but also build 450 new houses where 225 of these new structures will be constructed with the IBS.

“In Sabah, we have received a lot of applications for new houses due to the fact that most of the houses are dilapidated and repairing these homes will not be enough to turn them into a comfortable residence as we have a ceiling budget of RM15,000 for the works.

Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Government continued its momentum in managing the economy in line with the commitment and spirit of the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) when it posted record high state revenue of RM6.973 billion last year.

“Instead, it would be lower cost and more saving with IBS and I am sure that we (ministry) will be able to build more new houses,” she said after visiting one of the PPRT houses constructed with IBS at Kg Andus, here, Sunday.

Also present were Law and Native Affairs Minister cum Pantai Manis Assemblyman Datuk Aidi Moktar, Kawang Assemblyman Datuk Ghulam Haidar Khan Bahadar and Yayasan Afat Rahman founder Awang Fauzi Ahmad Tarmizi.

With a number of IBS manufacturers and contractors that have established in Sabah, Rina said that the Ministry along with the State Government, hoped to provide more projects with the “boosted” allocation next year.

“We are targeting to have more projects in 2020 that will directly impact the people in terms of PPRT, rural road programs and social amenity programmes. With this, we want to increase the allocation next year.

“If possible, we want triple for the roads, amenity social and people’s housing and this should not be a problem as we will be using the IBS technic and would hasten the works,” she added.

The house was part of a corporate social responsibility (CSR) project by the non-governmental organisation, Yayasan Afat Rahman which took three weeks to complete with cost of less than RM40,000.

She also commended the initiative and efforts of the organisation and said the ministry will always welcome corporate bodies or NGOs in their determination of supporting the government in rural community developments.

Rina said that the ministry continuously worked with private sectors in various programmes including Desa Harapan as well as Desa Pintar and assured that more have come forward to show their support towards the rural folks.

Meanwhile, 38-year-old self-employed Pengiran Syahril Pengiran Jalaludin, 38, said he was grateful for the three bedroom-house which would replace his previous run-down home which he has been living in for the past 15 years with his wife and eight children.
