KENINGAU: The Federal Government through the Prime Minister Department will channel a total of RM1.2 million for repairing existing buildings at the Sabah Institute of Islamic Studies and Preaching (Ipdas) Keningau branch and Ipdas Kudat branch this year.

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Hajah Fuziah Salleh, said the repairs would be carried out from August to December this year.

“I hope that in cooperation with the Sabah Islamic Religious Council (Muis) will find a way to bring the concept of Waqaf University into Ipdas,” she said in her speech at the Keningau Ipdas 14th Convocation Ceremony here on Saturday.

Fuziah said it aimed to develop additional buildings in the form of a waqaf concept and to accommodate the need for additional courses, especially Contemporary Dakwah courses.

The event was officiated by Minister of Law and Native Affairs, Datuk Haji Aidi Moktar. In his speech, Aidi hoped that the Federal and State government would continue to work together in developing Ipdas infrastructure.

He said spiritual and intellectual development needed to be supported by modern and latest infrastructure to enable Ipdas students to pursue education in a conducive environment.

“Therefore, I propose that facilities at Ipdas to be enhanced such as additional lecture halls and tutorial rooms, hostels, auditoriums, library, skills workshops, sports complexes as well as upgrading of existing buildings.

“I pray that Ipdas will continue to succeed in the field of Islamic education and become a University College or at least a new branding that can compete in the future,” he said.

Aidi said Ipdas is the only state-owned institution with 104 acres of land to be developed and the institute that comparative of public university in the country. During the ceremony, he reminded the graduates to stay true to the teachings of Sunnah Wal Jamaah scholars and to learn to celebrate diversity in the cultural and ethnic context in Sabah to avoid misunderstandings and slanders that could threaten the harmony of the community.

Therefore, he said, graduates need to be preachers who can unite the community so that unity, prosperity and harmony will continue to be achieved. At the convocation, a total of 232 graduates of the Islamic Preaching Diploma Programme and the Islamic Studies and Dakwah Certificate Programme were honoured and given recognition.
