KOTA KINABALU: Fifty-six people were rounded up during an integrated operation in and around the city aimed at eradicating undocumented immigrants, crime, drugs and social ills.

The six-hour operation, which ended about 9pm on Tuesday, was carried out in six locations, including Kolombong, Manggatal, Inanam, South Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park and the city centre.

All those detained, aged between 18 and 55, were brought to the Kota Kinabalu police headquarters for screening by the National Registration Department and Immigration Department.

As a result, 36 were released after their respective family members and employers were able to furnish their identification cards and original passports.

Ten people, including five comprising Filipinos and one Indonesian were further detained for immigration violations.

Teams from the General Operations Force, Rela, City Hall and Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd also took part in the operation.

City Police Chief ACP Habibi Majinji, in a statement Wednesday, said the operation focused on areas in the city where there is a concentrated growth in undocumented immigrants which invites crime activities.

He said the operation will be continued and welcomed those with information on criminal activities and undocumented immigrants to alert the nearest police station or the city police via their Facebook at Polis Kota Kinabalu or 019-2182729.
