Kota Kinabalu: More than 15 teams are set to take part in the inaugural Football League Open Tournament organised by Andrew Lian and Marven Sports starting in Penampang today (Saturday).

The three-day competition will be held in three separate venues at Penampang Stadium, Penampang Sports Complex field B and the district council field.

Fifteen teams have so far confirmed their participation as on Thursday, according to Andrew Lian, who is also the organising chairman.

“So far 15 teams have handed in the registration forms and we expect more to come in, as more than 40 forms have actually been taken by various teams earlier, so we expect some will join in late,” he said.

He added that regardless of the number of teams, the tournament will proceed as scheduled.

“We will start the tournament on schedule, because all the preparation has been done including booking of the venues and the engagement of match officials.”

All the participating teams will be divided into four groups and only the top two teams will progress to the next rounds.

Apart from trophy and medals, the champions will be getting RM5,000 cash while the second to fourth place winners will each receive RM2,500, RM1,500 and RM1,000 respectively.

In conjunction with the tournament, several events will also be held such as a blood donation campaign by Queen Elizabeth II Hospital and the anti-drug fair by the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK).

Meanwhile, Youth and Sports Minister Phoong Jin Zhe’s political secretary Henry Shim Chee On is expected to grace the tournament.
