Labuan needs a new port: MP
LABUAN: A new and modern port for Labuan is long overdue and should proceed without further delay so that the island could evolve into a “port city” with vibrant life, says Member of Parliament Datuk Rozman Isli.

He said moreover, the existing Liberty Port has not seen any major improvement over the last 50 years.

Stressing this to Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook during his recent visit to the island, Rozman said:

“Having the main port relocated would not mean that the existing port would be wasted. It could be used as a cruise ships terminal since it is suitably located in the centre of the town.

“The Labuan Development Blueprint 2030 has also emphasised this, but for the short-term the present port should also be upgraded.”

Rozman said not every city which has a port with natural harbour could become a port city.

“It is fortunate that Labuan has the potential. All that is needed is to tap the full potential and there are strong justifications for this.”

He hoped the Labuan Port Authority would help the island in achieving this vision.

A new port for Labuan was proposed under the 8th Malaysia Plan (MP) but due to look of funds, it was brought forward to the 10MP and now it is 11MP.

In May 2012, the then Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Rahman Bakri, during his visit here, said a 209-hectare site had been identified for the port and the estimated cost was RM1.4 billion.

Several years ago when Datuk Yussof Mahal was the Member Parliament here, a delegation from Shanghai Harbour and Port visited the island and expressed investment interest but there was no further development on this.
