Over 10,000 attend Labuan kite fest
LABUAN: The just-concluded Labuan International Kite Festival 2019 has been described as a huge success, with over 10,000 people from all walks of life, including from neighbouring Brunei, showing up for the three-day event despite the hot weather.

A total of 63 local and international kiting enthusiasts participated in the event, which began on Sept 6 at the Manikar beach facing the South China Sea.

It was jointly organised by Labuan Corporation and Majlis Pelayang Malaysia (MPM).

Federal Territories Minister Khalid Abdul Samad said the international circuit event was part of his Ministry’s efforts to boost the island’s tourism industry.

“The festival was a huge success. I think everyone had a blast; it should show everyone that Labuan has been wanting more events like this. So I hope it inspires more fun events in the future,” he said.

He said the success of the event would put Labuan in a good position if it bid to host the Malaysian kite festival in the future.

Among the foreign participants were from Australia, Brunei, Cambodia, China, Germany, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, Sweden, Scotland, Thailand and the United States.

The Malaysian participants were from Sarawak, MAS Malaysia, Pelayang Johor, MPM, Putrajaya, Kelantan and USM.

Khalid also said the ministry had formed the Council of Tourism, Culture and Arts to manage tourism issues in the three federal territories of Labuan, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya.
